This wheel-thrown tea bowl was made in my small pottery workshop here in Northern Taiwan.
I used Japanese porcelain clay and then used two contrasting glazes. The inner and sections of the outer bowl were glazed in a white crackle, while the lower one-third has a glossy black that reacted nicely with the soda.
The chawan was soda fired. Soda was sprayed into the kiln at high temperature. This soda circulates throughout the kiln depositing itself where it pleases. The soda then interacts with the silica forming a beautiful glaze on its own.
This type of firing is unique and specialized.
My makers mark is found near the foot ring.
Be the owner of a handmade tea bowl made on the beautiful island of Taiwan.
