Zenit 11 body USSR SLR 35mm film camera KMZ M42 mount

Zenit 11 (Зенит 11), vintage Soviet SLR camera 35 mm, M42 mount, 8703_2795 Krasnogorsky Mechanical Plant (KMZ), Krasnogorsk, USSR Good condition. Shutter, self-timer, exposure meter work properly. Shutter is cocked with effort. Left shutter curtain has large abrasion with light leakage. Body has signs of use and age. Inside the viewfinder there is dust and a thin black line. Tripod socket is absent. Lens is not included, body only. In the late 1970-s Krasnogorsky Mechanical Plant (KMZ) created a new shutter. It had the same shutter speed range as previous (used in Zenit E), but worked the shutter speeds more precise and curtains were moving more uniformly. The shutter speed barrel became immovable: it could be rotated manually only. The previous shutter speed barrel rotated both when cocking the shutter and releasing it. New shutter speed barrel could be used with TTL -exposure meter, telling it what shutter speed is chosen. Also some small changes were introduced: -body becamy fully black according to the fashion of that years; -backwind barrel was replaced with roulette; -rear cover lock became hidden (blocked with backwind roulette); -mirror became wider - that improved the brightness of the picture in the viewfinder; -cold shoe became hot shoe; -tripod socket was moved to the center of the bottom. Although this set of changes was designed for "Zenit TTL", KMZ decided to modernize cameras with built-in selenium exposure meter - "Zenit E" and "Zenit EM". So "Zenit E" became "Zenit 10" and "Zenit EM" became "Zenit 11". They differ with the mechanism of work with jumping aperture of the lens - only "Zenit 11" has it. Although it was the only difference both cameras were produced. "Zenit-10" was prodused for 2 years only (in 1981 and 1982), totally only 19865 pieces were made. It is interesing to notice that previous version ("Zenit E") was produced till 1982 and then its production (technology, drafts, spare parts) was moved to plant in Vilejka (BelOMO). But "Zenit EM" was produced up to 1985 together with its improved version "Zenit 11". So, KMZ produced simultaneously "Zenit-10,-11, EM, E" to say nothing about "Zenit TTL". In USSR quantitave result was the most important. So, "Zenit-11" was produced since 1981 till 1992 at KMZ only. Camera was very successful and due to worked through details became very reliable. Totally 1 481 022 pieces were made. Default lenses are "Helios-44M"(2/58), "Helios 44M-4"(2/58), "MC Helios-44M"(2/58), "MC Helios-44M-4"(2/58). Of course, all lenses with M42 mount fit this camera. Jumping aperture mode of the lens can be used. Shutter is cloth, horizontal moving, shutter speed range is 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 and B. When using flash the only shutter speed is 1/30. Camera has a hot shoe and self-timer. Body is aluminium, with rear cover on hinges. Built-in exposure meter calculator can be used when film with ISO 16-500 is set. Viewfinder has size 20*28 mm (65% of the frame square), dim glass with microraster ring and Fresnel lens. It is interesing that first cameras had two tripod sockets 1/4": at the center of the bottom and at the right side. The latter was inherited from "Zenit E". "Zenit-11" became the best SLR camera with selenium light meter - reliable, comfortable, well thought out. Unfortunately, for the 80-s it was rather archaic (small viewfinder with only 65% of real frame, poor shutter speed range, etc. - rudiments from the 1960s). At the same time better "Zenit TTL, -12" was produced simultaneously. This camera was also produced at BelOMO under the name "Zenit ET". Default lens is "Helios-44M", totally about 3 mln pieces were made. Note: in late 1960s KMZ produced experimental camera of the same name ("Zenit-11").
