“Light of Dawn” Pen & Ink Set
NMTL Collection Item
The Mei Tai Hō (Taiwan Clarity Newsletter) gave voice to the postwar hopes and dreams of both survivors and casualties of the Second World War. While awaiting repatriation in a Singapore prisoner-of-war camp, homesick Nantou native Chen Chien-wu joined fellow Taiwanese, who like he had served in the Japanese Army in Southeast Asia, to found the Mei Tai Kai (Association for Taiwan Clarity) and publish the Taiwan Clarity Newsletter. In words and action, the association called on Taiwanese to think carefully about their future. During their indefinite incarceration abroad, this high-minded, passionate group of youths put pen to paper and outlined their thoughts on the future of their beloved homeland.

Product Insight
All futures flow in aqueous ink; Earnest ambition is needed to pen a clear future for Taiwan.
“Dawn” is a metaphor for the power of the pen. Ink marks the waning hours of darkness, as the light of wisdom begins to cast a warming glow across deep, tenebrous seas. As the darkness of war began to fade and the light of new hope emerged, Taiwanese could not but ponder their fate in a new and unfamiliar world.
At war’s end, many Taiwanese believed that their island, newly freed from Japanese colonial rule, would become self-governing. A lively debate, joined by Taiwanese far and wide (including prisoner-of-war Chen Chien-wu) ensued regarding how this might all be organized. Chen Chien-wu and his Taiwanese comrades-in-arms began publishing the Taiwan Clarity Newsletter to help platform the vibrant stream of thoughts and ideas on this timely topic.
With an unsure future as their ink and ambition as their pen, contributors to this newsletter cast the light of a hopeful new dawn over their island home. Unfortunately, even before their ink had set, geopolitics intervened to cement a very different future for Taiwan, which relegated the Association’s lofty, hopeful ideas to the realm of wishful speculation.
The “Light of Dawn” Pen & Ink Set is a cobranded product of the National Museum of Taiwan Literature and certified made-in-Taiwan manufacturer Lennon Tool Bar. This highly meaningful commemorative set is imbued with the ideals of our forebears and ready to pen new and hopeful treatises on the future, while paying respectful homage to Chen Chien-wu’s spirit and passion.
