This wheel-thrown chawan was made in my small pottery workshop in Taiwan.
I used Taiwanese clay and then applied a shino glaze to the bowl. During the reduction firing parts of the tea bowl were oxidized, displaying a whitish color. I believe the contrast of the deep orange and white complement each other.
While still wet I paddled a wooden tool across the clay to create a patchwork pattern. This gives the bowl some interest and also displays the handmade quality. The pattern is found on two sides of the tea bowl.
I hand-carved the foot ring, again giving the tea bowl more character and originality. A good chawan should entice the viewer to want to touch and hold the bowl. I would like to think that this one does that.
Be the owner of a handmade tea bowl from the beautiful island of Taiwan.
