This type of chess set had been manufacturing from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s in the Mordovian ASSR (Mordovian Autonomous Socialist Republic – now called Republic of Mordovia, located southeast of the Moscow region), in Temnikovsky correctional labor camps (Temlag) in the village of Yavas and the surrounding settlements.
