Chawan

This tea bowl was wheel thrown in my pottery workshop here in Northern Taiwan. I have a small studio that overlooks the mountains of Yamingshan. It is always nice looking at them. I threw this bowl from local Taiwanese clay. I then applied a shino glaze that is traditionally a warm or orange, white color. I also dusted wood ash over the bowl to add some more interest and depth. I love the thought that Taiwanese trees are now part of this bowl. While throwing the chawan I moved the clay around quite a lot. I wanted to make a tea bowl that was unique, comfortable to hold, and pleasing to look at. They saw a good tea bowl will capture your imagination as you move it around in your hands. I hand-carved the foot ring adding to the uniqueness of the chawan. I believe the hand of the maker must be present. A handmade tea bowl can add pleasure to your daily life. This one can be yours.
